I often find it amazing how two
different aspect of one's life can be
drawn together by what appears to be
coincidence.
I was seeking information on an
idea for this column and was
somehow led to another issue. That
new lead tied directly to matters of
considerable discussion and attention
at my daytime occupation. In talks
about health and safety issues at the
workplace and how to deal with on-
farm situations, it was brought to my
attention that, effective June 30, the
Ontario Occupational Health and
Safety Act will apply to all farm
operations that employ workers.
To some, particularly those with a
single hired hand, the rules and
regulations may seem onerous.
However, for large corporate farms, it
is an avenue for communication
between owners, managers and
workers to ensure safety for all.
There are several websites which
outline what is expected of an
employer/employee and the first to
check out should be the Ministry of
Labour at www.labour.gov.on.ca
/english/hs/farming/index.html. The
OMAFRA site search for OHSA also
provided background information on
the act along with the rights and
responsibilities of employer and
employee.
The Pocket Extract for Farming

site, outlines some of the basic •
principles of the act which apply to
farms. It must be noted again that this
does not apply to farms without paid
workers.
