14 THE RURAL VOICE
"I think what tempts me to get out
the gun is the places you call and you
can never get a human being to
answer," said Cliff. "I mean they
can't be busy all the time. I start
imagining an office full of people
who are having coffee and playing
on-line poker and never answering
the damn phones."
"And if you have a complaint, or
they owe you money, good luck in
ever getting them to phone you
back!" fumed George. "See what I
mean about the danger of guns being
too close at hand?"
"You guys sound just like the
image of all these gun -toting country
rednecks that you complain about
seeing in the big city media," said
Molly.
"Don't get me started on the
media!" thundered George. "I mean
all that attention for those wacko
celebrities out in Newfoundland
protecting the cute little seals from
the barbaric seal hunters."
"Did you see that seal snap at
Heather McCartney's nose?"
chuckled Molly. "I wonder if the
seals would have seemed so cute if it
bit off her nose?"
"Do you think the McCartneys
know that seals are hunters
themselves?" wondered Cliff.
"Maybe they'd have tried to convince
the seal to become vegetarian."
"Funny thing how it's fine and
downright majestic for animals to be
hunters but not humans," said Dave.
"I mean did you see that piece they
had on the CBC news about wolves
that were exported from Canada to
repopulate Yellowstone Park and all
the hundreds of thousands of people
that go there every year just to watch
them?"
"Yes, but did you see how they'd
show the wolves chasing the elk but
they'd always cut away before the
wolf brought down the ellc and tore it
to pieces?" said Cliff.
"But meanwhile when it comes to
sealers killing seals, they show every
bloody blow in slow motion," said
Dave.
"Sounds like we're being
discriminated against," said George.
"Maybe we should call the human
rights commission."
"Yes, but if you did, you'd likely
just get voice mail and they'd never
get back to you," said Dave.O
