The Rural Voice, 2006-04, Page 43Glass -lined steel tanks are a
relatively new option for producers
needing liquid manure storage. These
above -ground tanks come pre-
engineered so require lower
engineering costs for each project.
Because they're high above
ground, no fence is needed. The
Harvestor Slurrystore system
includes an agitation system.
There's perhaps an added benefit
of disguise. Since most people think
of manure storage as a concrete tank,
they may not recognize the metal
tanks as a manure storage.
The newest option for Ontario
farmers is the earthen liquid manure
lagoon. Long used in some other
parts of North America, the earthen
tanks have never been favoured in
Ontario.
Earthen storages offer the lowest
cost, but they take up more space
because they have sloping sides and
therefore must be larger because they
will collect more precipitation. The
side effect is the,re is about 50 per
cent more liquid to be spread.
Earthen lagoons also have the
largest minimum distance separation.
They have a high odour problem
unless a permanent cover is used.
Unless it's -a difficult site,
structural engineering costs
will be lower but you're
looking at higher geotechnical
engineering costs to make sure the
soil conditions are safe.
The lagoon must be a maximum
of three metres in depth with sloped
sides. The interior surface must be
disked to a depth of 150 mm, then
recompacted.
Under the storage secondary
synthetic, geosynthetic or natural
(engineered soil) liners can be used.
Clay can be imported from other
locations to provide a liner.
Which option is right for your
farm will depend on your type of
operation and the specifics of your
situation. One thing that all farmers
have in common, however, is that the
storage of manure is going to come
under more scrutiny in the future.
The time when manure was piled out
back and forgotten until it was time
to spread it on the fields is long gone.
Farmers are going to have to be
aware of their options and of what
government support is available for
their storage solutions.0
