Operators who have an arrangement with a manure broker, as broiler producers do in some parts of the province, can also reduce their storage capacity. If the broker can provide 60 days of storage capacity, for instance, the requirement for the farmer is reduced to 180 days. These exceptions will be accounted for in the nutrient management strategy designed for the farm. Even if a covered manure storage is the selected choice, the problem of run-off isn't completely offset unless the manure has more than 30 per cent dry matter content. The upslope water must also be diverted away from the storage. The advantage of the covered storage, however, is evident when looking at requirements to contain run-off from an uncovered storage. According to the OMAFRA fact sheet, the run-off storage system must have at least capacity for 1.53 litres of effluent per day per square metre of uncovered surface area. For a farmer with a 30 by 20 metre uncovered storage, for instance, the requirement for 240 days of storage amounts to 220,000 litres of storage, or 220 cubic metres. In addition the capacity of the run- off storage must be calculated considering the direct precipitation. There are less expensive options such as permanently vegetated flow paths, if your manure has a dry matter of level of 30 per cent or greater. Upslope water must be diverted around the storage area and the surface of the storage must be less than 300 square metres. The distance required from surface water or any tile drainage inlet varies according to the dry - matter content of the manure. If the dry matter is less than 50 per cent, the storage must be at least 150 metres from surface water. If the dry matter content is more than 50 per cent, the distance is reduced to 50 metres. The permanently vegetated flow - path must be situated on a minimum of a half -metre of soil and not located within three metres of a field tile drain, 100 metres of a municipal well, 15 metres of a drilled well that has a depth of at least 15 metres and
