southern exposure to take advantage
of the low sun in the winter, and a
solar panel on the roof to heat water
in the summer.
There are still a few signs of
construction: a lot of drywall yet to
be done, and some doors waiting to
be hung, but the house was now fully
liveable and incredibly inviting.
Martin is now slowly tackling that
work between his part-time teaching
jobs and caring for Silas, but he does
so now with the confidence of a
seasoned handyman.
Cathy, who is now expecting their
second child, will continue working
until early summer, and by that time
most of the house should be finished
in time to enjoy the summer. They
love their new home and feel so
fortunate to have found so many new
friends while building it.
Jn addition to the practical reasons
for building with straw bales, for
some people the choice has deep
spiritual and philosophical
dimensions. The people who live in
them feel more grounded and
connected to the land they live on.
Owners and builders of bale
homes tend to see themselves as part
of a vital and growing community
and welcome the opportunity to
impart knowledge or give a hand to
others making this journey. The
volunteers who show up at bale
raisings are often people dreaming of
building their own straw bale house
one day, and give their labour freely
and with passion. There is something
wonderful about the energy
generated when a house is built with
this kind of interest and enthusiasm.
There is also something special
about having a home which demands
less from the earth. Turning a by-
product of grain farming into a
primary building material, one that
needs less energy to stay
comfortable, should be enough to
make anyone smile.
While you may not find one down
the road from you any time soon, the
number of people looking to build
straw bale houses in Ontario is
definitely growing. Workshops on
straw bale construction are held
across the province throughout the
summer months, and contractors,
insurance companies and building
inspectors are slowly realising the
modern potential of this old
technology .0
