18 THE RURAL VOICE
ground cover, absorbed all of the
rainfall with no runoff. The result
was the soil had enough moisture for
11 days of growth.
Medium -quality pasture with 75
per cent ground cover, had 10 per
cent of the water run off the land
without being absorbed. The soil held
enough moisture for six days of
growing.
The poor pasture suffered so much
run-off that the soil held only enough
moisture for three days' growth. The
owner of this pasture would likely be
complaining about drought when his
neighbour had plenty of moisture,
Gerrish said.
Not only does healthy pasture,
with its healthy root system, allow
more water to be absorbed into the
ground, but the healthy root system
helps recover more moisture in times
of need.
Roots make up half to two-
thirds of the biomass of the
plant, Gerrish explained.
When those roots die and are
recycled, they create the organic
material in the soil that helps the soil
retain moisture (and also tie up
carbon dioxide in the soil).
While some additional fertilizer
may need to be added from time to
time, most of the nutrients taken
from the soil through plants go right
out through the back end of the cattle
beast to be used again. With
potassium, for instance, 99 per cent
of the potassium intake in cattle goes
back out in the urine.
"Higher quality forage generates
higher quality manure which cycles
nutrients faster," Gerrish said. Rich
green forage produces loose manure
patties which break down faster than
the more solid deposits of cattle that
have fed on older, drier plants. "If it
breaks down faster you won't have to
buy fertilizer so much," he said.
Ammonia, which contains
nitrogen, is a valuable nutrient. "We
want to keep it in our soil," he said.
"In grass, urine won't be so likely to
evaporate as on bare ground. It will
infiltrate faster into the soil."
The way you manage your pasture
will also determine the ongoing
diversity of species within your
pasture mix. Continuous grazing
pushes your pasture toward less
