The Rural Voice, 2005-12, Page 37speed for tunnel ventilation is 250
feet per minute, Huffman said. Some
farmers are increasing the air's
contact with the birds by installing
ceiling baffles every 50-80 feet.
Some producers have also added
internal fans to try to increase the air
flow but these must work with the
flow of the air, he said.
But ventilation has its limits
which is why more and more
producers are turning to cooling
systems. "We've done about all we
can with moving air over the birds,"
says Huffman. "Evaporation is
what's left."
In the hot weather people crowd
onto the beaches. One reason is that
the evaporation from the water cools
the air.. As well, if we go into the
water and come back out, the
evaporation from our skin cools us.
"If you can change the state of
water from liquid to a gas you can
get rid of a lot of heat, about 1,000
BTU for a half -litre of water,"
explained Huffman.
poultry producers have often
used the power of evaporation
to combat heat waves in the
past by spraying water on the roofs
of their barns. Newer systems of
spraying and misting are taking the
water right inside the barn.
Ironically, while higher humidity in
the air can create greater discomfort,
increasing the humidity in the air
inside a farm from 30 to 50 per cent
through spraying or misting can cool
the temperature by five or six
degrees.
If you are going to make use of
spraying or misting systems you
must be able to measure the relative
humidity within the barn, Huffman
warned. You never want the
humidity to climb over 80 per cent.
Birds can lose heat by the air
being cooled through the additional
water, and from being wet and
evaporating the water off their bodies
and from the bedding., However it's
important that only enough water be
applied that the bedding doesn't get
wet.
High pressure misting systems
typically are turned on for a minute,
then off for one to five minutes. They.
shouldn't be turned on continuously
unless there is extreme heat or it's
very dry.
Low pressure sprinklers are
generally turned on for 20-30
seconds, then turned off for 5-15
