What caused the damage to this
tree has intrigued many observers.
and hung, still attached, from a height
of eight or 10 feet. Several small
saplings adjacent to the holes had
been broken off, their shredded stubs
all that remained. A larger sapling,
three or four inches in diameter and a
foot or more from one of the holes,
had lost all the bark near the base and
had tendrils of bark and wood
hanging away from its mangled stem.
The tree quickly became a bit of a
novelty in the area and the Pryce
woodlot had many visitors through
the spring and early summer. There
were almost as many theories about
the cause of damage as there were
visitors. Some thought it was
lightning, while others were sure it
was an animal of some kind.
Sightings the previous summer of
both a cougar and bear in central
Huron County led some to speculate
that one of them could be the culprit.
Discovery of a racoon carcass nearby,
hair caught on the rough &vood
around the holes and what appeared
to be a few teeth marks on the wood
seemed to support the theory that the
damage was caused by an animal. A
retired Conservation Officer visited
the site (no doubt en route to Tim
Hortons) and couldn't rule out the
possibility of animal damage.
