Gord Pryce, who farms near
Winthrop, has always taken an
interest in his woodlot.
He participated in the Woodlands
Improvement Act program when it
was offered by the Ministry of
Natural Resources and is a founding
member, and secretary, of the Huron
Perth Chapter of the Ontario Woodlot
Association. He has periodically
harvested logs from his woodlot and
also cuts a good quantity of firewood
every year, burning up to 40 face
cords a year in an outdoor furnace to
heat their home and shop. Over the
years, Gord (often accompanied by
his wife Irma) has attended many of
woodlot related workshops and tours
with topics ranging from general
management activities to edible
mushrooms, chainsaw safety and
timber framing. Considering the
amount of time Gord has spent
working in the bush and learning
about related topics, he was surprised
this spring when he ran across a
situation that he had never seen
before and was hard pressed to
•
explain.
A basswood tree near the edge of
his woodlot had been literally torn to
shreds! The tree, about 1.6 inches in
diameter, is hollow with two holes at
the base. Bark near both holes was
totally gone. Long strips of bark had
been pulled out from the base of tree

The sturdy chimney with full
3" insulation material!
7 good reasons why it is highly recommended
- for people who don't have money to waste!
1. An exceptionally SA'E chimney
2. Better Draft
3. Better solid fuel combustion
4. Less creosote formation
5. More heating from less solid fuel
(a double saving every time the
heating unit is used)
6. Less smoke.
7. Less pollution (but save money at
the same time) as Tess money goes
up the chimney in the form of
erce..ive smoke and unburned gase.
