OFA presidents tour Huron County
Thursday, August 11 OFA
President Ron Bonnett and Vice -
President Paul Mistele made a tour of
Huron County.
In the morning Walter and Renee
Stalenhoef hosted an informal
"kitchen" type meeting at their farm in
West Wawanosh Township with a
dozen neighbours coming in to meet
and visit with Ron and Paul. After
lunch the two presidents travelled to
the farm of Paul and Heather Klopp in
Hay Township who also had
neighbours in to talk with Ron and
Paul.
Later in the afternoon Ron and Paul
met with Huron East Mayor, Joe Seili
and HCFA President Nick Whyte to
discuss the proposed cattle killing
plant in Brussels.
The day concluded with a barbecue
at the pine cabin of Nick and Joan
Whyte. Those present were members
and spouses of the Huron Federation
of Agriculture Board of Directors,
along with Ron Bonnett and Paul
Mistele. Huron -Perth Member Service
Rep. Paul Nairn did a superb job of
cooking smoked pork chops, a
complement to the delicious pot luck
meal. The evening concluded with the
two OFA Presidents speaking briefly
to the Board and answering many
questions.
Thank you, Ron and Paul for
coming to Huron, to the `grass roots'.0
Huron County Federation of Agriculture at work
Actions taken by the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture at its July
board meeting include:
• The Guest Co-ordinator for
Huron -Bruce riding of Farmgate 5 was
present. A motion was made for HCFA
to support this group. The group hopes
to have a booth set up at the
International Plowing Match to get
more signatures.
• HCFA approved to support the
Risk Management Program set up by
the Ontario Grains and Oilseeds group.
The HCFA will be sending letters to
agri-businesses in Huron asking them
to obtain a supply of the yellow
postcards to give out to their
customers to ask their support for
agriculture. Huron Federation is also
asking other county federations to do
the same thing.
• A letter was sent to the
Administration Procedures for
Agriculture Drainage Infrastructure
program with suggestions for drain
process improvements.
• A letter was sent to the Huron
County weed inspector with concern
of weeds (Canada Thistles) and the
blockage of views of traffic at certain
intersections in the county on back
roads.
• There was a concern of the effect
of reassessment of lakefront property
taxes. Paul Nairn is looking into
checking with OFA on this.
• A congratulatory letter was sent to
Dr. Bill Schaefer of Kirkton who has
been appointed to the Ontario Rural
Affairs Tribunal.0
