I've heard somewhere that
planting a tree is one of the most
unselfish actions a person can make.
since it is future generations who will
reap most of the benefits. Most tree
planting projects utilize seedlings or
saplings acquired from q commercial
nursery or landscape business.
Another option that few people
consider. but one that can potentially
be both interesting and satisfying, is
growing some of your own trees from
seed.
Growing trees from seed is not
rocket science, but like anything else.
there is more to learn than you might
think. Nurseries that grow tree
seedlings on a large scale usually
have specialized equipment and
considerable knowledge gained
through years of experience.
However, anyone with an interest
should be able to easily learn enough
to grow some seedlings on a small
scale and have a bit of furl while
they're at it.
The first point to learn is that local
seed is best. Local trees are adapted
to your soils and climate, so are likely
to perform better. Please don't grow
non-native species unless you're sure
they won't create any problems for
local ecosystems. Some introduced
species like Norway maple and Scots
pine can be invasive and displace
