The Rural Voice, 2005-09, Page 7Feedback China - is it Rural Voice or Peoples' Voice? I have to ask for clarity on The Rural Voice's position with respect to China. As a country that in some of your articles is vilified for unfair trade practices (re: Stuck in a Niche - cheap Garlic from China) against the article of Duncan McCallum in praise of modern China, I have to say 1 am_ confused. For myself. both of these articles offend me on a personal level — China is the world's number one rights abuser on every level — against it citizens, the environment and most of all — democracy and freedom. It appears you have forsaken your editorial rights and responsibilities in favour of Duncan's review provided by the PRC. It is clear that Duncan is misguided, lacks the skills to do any sort of pre -cursory market analysis and is a communist sympathizer. I. enjoy reading your magazine. If you are challenged for editorial resources and need to fall on the PRC to help you write copy I would be more than willing to up my subscription fee to read truth rather than propaganda. If you choose to continue on your current path 1 offer two suggestions: l) considering changing the name of your magazine to The People's Voice and 2) running an article on successful Al Qaeda farming practices. — Mark Cowan, Toronto Ed. Note: The Rural Voice does not have an editorial "position" on any subject. We believe in allowing multiple viewpoints.0 Poor pay more to reward supply managed farmers 1 read the article about the McIntosh family (40 Years of Stability) in the last issue, and while I don't begrudge them, or anyone else. the success supply management . has brought them, the article leaves an important public policy issue unexplored. Firstly, one of the purposes of supply management was to increase the farm gate price of milk, eggs, and chicken, all food products for which there are few, if any, substitutes, and it has done so, quite admirably. However, because these are all food products, and because poor people pay a higher percentage of their disposable income on food than rich people pay, any increase in the farm gate price of these •supply -managed food products. is going to he felt more by the poor. than by the rich. Secondly, according to government data, supply managed farmers are now the richest group of farmers in production agriculture. Therefore. while supply management continues to be a huge success for those farmers who are lucky enough to have been in it for some time, public policy makers are increasingly being forced to confront the following dilemma — Why should the poorest group of consumers he disproportionately supporting the richest group of farmers?0 — Stephen Thome', r RR 2, Clinton, ll.ti PACKERS: WE BUILD RUBBER TIRE PACKER SPECIALISTS Order Now Also large fold -up steel drum packers, lawn & estate rollers, custom manufactured HAROLD JONES ENTERPRISES RR #2, Arthur, Ont.
