Using a farmer ID card to claim an exemption from RST
As of April 2005 the 2004 Ontario Budget announced that farmers will be allowed to use a
GFO (General Farm Organization) issued Farmer ID card in lieu of a PEC (Purchase
Exemption Certificate) to make eligible purchases exempt from RST (Retail Sales Tax).
Types of goods that come under this plan are: farm implements, farm machinery, farm
equipment, farm supplies, repair parts, building materials and agricultural products.
Farmer ID cards are issued to member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Christian
Farmers' Federation of Ontario and the National Farmers Union. The Farmer ID cards may not
be used to purchase goods or services for resale or for use by a manufacturer.
The Farmer ID card shows the farmer's name and Farm Business Registration number.
Vendors should record these two pieces of information on their sales billings.
