Rain, rain, go away, come again
another day! .
The past week has been wet to say
the least. I don't know how your
place is but we are thoroughly
saturated here. The lawn cutting has
been catchy at best, in between
showers hoping you don't get water
running down your neck before you
get to the house.
The June meeting of the Rainy
River Federation was held in the Emo
Curling Club on June 7. The
committee reports show some people
have been very busy. The OAFE
committee report that the Farm Safety
Committee has been working in
tandem and when Will -O -Mar Farm
hosts a farm tour, information packets
are given to all in attendance. Words
of wisdom are getting out to the
public.
The OAFE committee also
reported that Bernie Zimmerman's
cows and calves had lots of visitors
when he took them to the Farmers'
Market and demonstrated milking.
The little people were enchanted with
the calves and enjoyed getting up
close and personal with them. Baby
animals and children certainly seem
to be attracted to one another.
Angela Halverson has the bus and
rooms booked for the Agribition Bus
Tour. If you are at all interested in
going please call Ang at 274-3276 or
Kim Jo at 482-3863.
The Bright Ideas Committee is still
looking for suggestions for activities
and places to visit. If you have an
idea for something feasible that can
be accommodated give Kim Jo a call
and some investigating will be done.
The Public Relations Committee
has noted that the Photography Club
will meet again on June 21. The
Rainy River Future Development
Corporation will hold their annual
meeting in the Devlin Hall on June
29, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. There are some
4-H activities planned for July. A
conference July 15, 16, 17 and an
activity on July 13. Contact Kim Jo
for more information.
The Entertainment Committee is
hard at work finalizing the details for
the annual meeting in october. The
details will be presented at the August
2 meeting.
Kim Jo has contacted the sponsors
for the Farm Beautification Project
and has their agreement to take part.
She has notices printed and posters
out. Entry forms are printed in the fall
fair prize book.
Linda reports that there are
approximately 10 booths available in
the farm progress building and the
outlook is good for a successful
show.
The Bursary Committee reported
that four young people had applied:
three from Fort Frances High School
and one from Rainy River High
School. After some discussion to
clarify requirements. Angela moved
and Kim Jo seconded that the four
applicants be each given a bursary of
$200. For Rainy River the recipient is
Jamie VandenBrand. The Fort
Frances recipients are Rebecca
Cornell. Eldon Gibson and J. J.
Hunsperger. Congratulations and all
the best in your chosen fields.
King Jo reported that there are 36
steers in the feeder club this year. The
leaders are trying to seek out new
buyers and explain the processing
details that go along with buying an
animal. Most of all it is an
encouragement to the 4-11 members.
Angela reported that the
Agricultural Society had called a
work day for the fair grounds and
only five people showed up. Those
who were there did a walk -about and
there is a "to do" list so that any
volunteer help will he appreciated.
The loggers have requested time to
extend their show and there will he
no barnyard Olympics this year. The
horse club has added a parade of
breeds to the parade. This should add
to the interest of the fair. There will
be no dances again this year.
The Emo Research Station has
hired two students this year. Noreen
Hartlin has returned again and has
been working since May 2 and
Stephanie Strachan will begin on
May 16. There have been barley.
wheat and oat performance trials
planted as well as a block of chapais.
treated against untreated seed.
The weather update shows the
average temperature for April was 8.3
which is four degrees higher than
April 2004. We had 25.8 mm or one -
inch of rain and one cm of snow.
Since the Ag Summit held in April
there has been a wind-up session on
May 24 and some of the ideas were
Fleshed out a little more. We have
some issues and opportunities that
need to he recognized for what they
can do to improve the Ag sector in
the Rainy River District which will
have a spinoff effect for the whole
area. Trish is currently working on
preparing an Economic Framework
Paper to be sent to each of the groups
that were represented at the summit.
Angela brought a request from the
Backyard Equine Enthusiasts for a
sponsorship for the planned show and
activity day. We will donate an article
or two for their penny table or
auction. We hope the idea takes off
and they can add to the diversity of
activity in the district.
The meeting with Ken Boschoff
has started some discussion as to how
we can hest advise him as to needs in
the district and what we hope he can
help us with and who we can contact
when we need information.
Linda reported that she had a letter
from the Minister of Agriculture
Steve Peters. He will be in the area
August 17 and hopefully we will he
able to meet with him and show him
some of the sights of the area.
Member Service Rep Betty
Salchert brought news of the 70th
Anniversary plans and requested we
find some of the pictures and
memorabilia that could perhaps he
used in the preparations.
Welcome to Linda Turk our new
Northwest Link editor. I hope you
find the work interesting and
challenging but not too challenging.
A kind word is never lost: it keeps
going on and' on. from one person to
another until at last it comes hack to
