Woodlot
Management
not grow well and may be more
susceptible to stem cankers.
Improper site selection may result in
a stand of slow growing, defective
trees that will never have any
merchantable value.
Seedlings are usually available at
nurseries, but some people may
consider planting the nuts. Nuts are
easily collected in the fall (they
usually drop after the first heavy frost
or a strong wind) and can be planted
immediately after collecting. The
easiest way to plant them is to drop
the nut (husk and all) on the ground,
then step on it to embed it in the
ground. Plant Tots, as squirrels are
often fairly efficient at finding them.
It is very important to control
competing vegetation in young
walnut stands. Some competing
herbaceous species may actually have
allelopathic effects on young walnut
trees in addition to competing for
light, moisture and nutrients.
Pruning is also important; both
corrective pruning to maintain a
single, straight stem as well as side
branch pruning to promote
development of logs that will produce
knot free lumber or veneer. There
has been considerable amount of
literature produced in the U.S. on
pruning of walnut.
