because they don't use harsh
chemicals to dissolve vegetable
matter, explains Kristine. They wash
the fleece which gets rid of grease in
the wool but not particles of straw.
After examining the fleece to try
to remove tag and other easily -
removed dirt, the wool goes to the
washing machine. They weigh the
fibre so they can divide it equally
into the three sections of the wash
tub, each of which can take about
three pounds of wool, except for
certain wools that require less fibre.
Abiodegradable soap with
citrus fruit as the active
ingredient is added. (The mill
has a pleasant smell of orange, lemon
or grapefruit during washing,
depending on which fruit was the
base for the soap.)
The washing process is lengthy
with a wash cycle, followed by a
rinse, followed by another wash
cycle and two more rinses. The water
from the final two rinse cycles is
recycled. "We try to treat water as
the special stuff it is." Angelika says.

After the final rinse the fibre goes
on racks to dry, generally taking
about 12 hours if spread out. The
drying can be sped up with the use of
a household fan.
The fibre is still in clumps at this
point. Next it goes through a "picker"
to tease the fibres apart. The picker
has a drum with long spikes to pull
the clumps of fibre apart. The fibre is
then blown into the picker room,
about the size of a large closet, where
the fibre mounts up on the floor.
Conditioner may be added to reduce
the static in the wool.
The fibre is collected in plastic
bags from the picker room to take it
to the carding machine. The carder
has large drums with brushes that
align the fibre in the same direction.
The fibre comes away from the
machine in long strips called
"rovings". By adjusting the machine,
they can also wind the fibre around a
