In areas where there are fewer walnut trees, mills may not have well established markets for the lumber, plus the smaller volumes they saw are harder to market. As with any timber sale, forest owners with walnut trees for sale should be sure to get bids from several buyers to ensure they get fair market. In future, markets will see further change in response to influences such as consumer preference; however, walnut will no doubt continue to be a valuable species and who knows, may regain its elite status. Woodland owners should continue to manage for walnut where soil conditions are suitable and, as with any species, manage them with the objective of producing the best quality trees possible. Next month's column will highlight other interesting characteristics of black walnut. If you have questions about woodlot management or ideas for topics you would like to see covered in a future column. please contact Steve Bowers at 519-482-3661 or steve.bowers@mnr.gov.on.ca.
