spent the night with them. The next
day they headed for Queen's Park,
with his trip made more memorable
by a wheel bearing that wore out on
the front wheel of the tractor.
About 100 tractors drove up to the
Legislature. Hill parked his tractor
near the main entrance and
remembers feeling happy to find
others from back home had driven
down to be part of the demonstration.
The doors to the Legislature were
locked and despite the noisy group
outside, Stewart refused to come out
to talk to them. Robert Nixon of the
Liberals and Donald MacDonald of
the NDP were more than willing to
talk.
Agroup of farmers found a
back door unlocked and soon
a lot of demonstrators had
found their way into the building.
Soon they were chanting and
stamping their feet and the floors
were shaking. Stewart came out to
speak to them now but by then the
farmers were so impatient, they
shouted him down.

that grain through livestock and
create a surplus there too.

farmers during Hill's years at OFA
also was accomplished by a popular
grassroots uprising of farmers. As far
back as 1949 the provincial
government had agreed farmers were
