he said.
He said the manure is stored in part
of the barn that is naturally
ventilated, with a cement floor and a
roof over it.
"We could store the manure in the
barn for up to eight months," he said.
"1 feel we have better manure,
because there is nothing leaching out
of it."
John admits he thought the
manure storage area required was
overly generous but by this past
spring when he could get on the land
he realized he needed a lot of space
for storage.
He will spread the manure on the
fields in the spring and again in the
fall.
He said the barn is temperature
controlled with a propane heater.
With the natural ventilation in the
summer, it is Tess expensive to
operate.
"The barn is more efficient and
comfortable for the pigs," he said.
There have been no fighting or tail -
biting problems, possibly, he says,
because with so much room to roam
pigs can find their own comfort area.
There had been concerns that with
such large pens pigs might run
around too much and productivity
would suffer but pigs generally have
their own area and don't get too
much exercise.
The Nesbits had an open house last
year, and at that time they had a
number of people come and tell them
they liked the concept.
"We are environmentally friendly
with the dry manure which is safer
on the land," said John. "We use very
little hydro."0
