Hay also continues to dry through
the storage period and 8-10 per cent
of the weight can be lost over a
winter.
After the difficulty of making hay
last year, he began exploring the use
of a hay drier and went to a U.S.
farm show to learn more about it. He
was impressed and he came back
with an agreement to be a dealer for
the Italian manufacturer.
The dryer will take hay at 30 per
cent moisture and dry it down in six
hours. He feels the dryer will allow
him to sell hay at premium prices.
Horse clients in particular will like
the fact the dryer eliminates dust and
mould. he thinks.
When using chemicals to
preserve hay he notes it's
difficult to keep track of
which bales are treated and which
aren't. If you have treated bales
stacked against untreated bales it's
possible the moisture will migrate
from one to the other.
Like Scott, he uses a high capacity
big square baler. Square bales allow
him to pul 23 tons on a truckload
compared to 17 tons with round
bales.
In preparation for each season's
crop he goes over his fields in spring
with a flail mower to get rid of stems
from the previous season. He also
plants new hay mixtures a little
thicker than normal because he's
looking for softer stems.
Supplying the horse market here
in Ontario can be a real boon to
farmers selling hay, John Walzach,
chief operating officer with the
Ontario Harness Horse Association
told those present. The 6,000
members of his association have
about 15,000 horses at 15 tracks and
training centres. "We're the biggest
jurisdiction for harness racing in
North America — maybe the biggest
in the world," he said.
The 15 tracks all have Racetrack
Slots operations and that has boosted
annual purses for the 17,000 races
annually to $190 million from $82
million in 1998. A University of
Guelph study of the economic impact
of the additional money the tracks
are taking in at 7,000-8,000 new jobs
with $60 million in new salaries and
