The Rural Voice, 2005-03, Page 7these periodic test results indicate
that an area has an increase in
contamination, then action can be
taken to resolve the problem. Given
the size of the province and the
historic quality of our water this has
been an efficient and cost-effective
means of ensuring an ongoing, safe
and healthy water system.
Elected officials must step forward
and provide leadership and guidance
on behalf of voters. This means that
when legislation is proposed the
elected officials must review the
implication of what is proposed and
decide what is acceptable in terms of
"cost" and "risk". Events over the
past few years (Walkerton water,
terrorist activities, etc.) have put
pressure on elected officials to accept
erery piece of legislation that
appears to increase safety and health.
Society cannot afford, nor shall it
wish to be. so restrictive as to accept
this degree of regimentation.
Thus, I believe that every Ontario
resident should contact their MPP
and ask them to have this water
legislation rescinded. If it is not
rescinded, we will lose many
community functions including
church and community activities and
many private business operations.
Many agriculture operations will be
directly affected including those
offering direct activity with
consumers. Something as simple as
sending baking with your children to
the local school for a fundraising sale
will not be possible under this new
legislation. We will not have any
greater security in terms of water
safety.
At the same time. all MPPs should
be asked to examine all legislation,
existing and planned, to determine
the impact on all parts of society.
Regulatory proponents and units will
always propose more rather than less
regulation and inspection. Elected
officials must represent society in
terms of where we spend our money
and what priorities to pursue. You
and 1 can make a difference but only
if we speak to our MPP or send a
copy of this letter to your MPP and
ask them to speak up and "recind"
this water Iegislation.0
