28 THE RURAL VOICE
Trails protect the liability of farmers.
land -use agreement, Howson said
there were a handful who wondered
what was going on. "Most were open
to the idea of a trail, though. The idea
of crop damage by the big groomers
was a bit of a concern, however."
Initially contact was made with
landowners as to whether or not they
would allow a trail to cross their
property. "They would say where
they wanted it. They let us know and
we worked around it."
The unwilling o.nes could
occasionally make things
interesting. "If someone in the
middle said no, that did present a
problem, but you figured it out."
With the system having been in
place for so many years, it makes the
trail co-ordination much simpler
now. Howson said that the majority
of their trails have been in the same
place for 15 years.
OFSC and its clubs recognize how
important the landowners' co-
operation is and do their utmost to try
and guarantee that the experience is a
positive one for both sides.
Landowners receive no
compensation. However, last year
OFSC subsidized a landowner gift
which could be handed out by clubs
at the beginning of the year. Also,
some clubs have found their own
ways to show their appreciation
through special events like
barbecues.
Another way to say thanks is
through respect. When travelling
snowmobilers are reminded to stay
on the trails and to respect equipment
