There's a lot of follow up whether someone calls to donate a cow or to donate money, he says. When a cow is donated, processing time has to be arranged and the cow has to be picked up and delivered on time. In the case of money, though a generous offer is made, it's not always followed through on so sometimes gentle reminders need to he made. Becker illustrates the logistical problems that sometimes arise with the tale of an offer the previous day from a farmer at Kurtzville, north of Listowel who had a cow to donate but it had to go that day. Of the butchers in the program, only the one in Mount Elgin was available so it meant a long trip from his farm near Gads Hill to Kurtzville to Mount Elgin and back home. "But that's part of the program. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining," he says. "It's a lot of work, but it's been rewarding," says Ritsma. "During the summer Gary and I did a barbecue. If you're a needy person there are not many chances you have to fire up a Donate A Hog program back for 2004 Ontario pork producers are once again launching the "Donate A Hog" program to ensure nutritious pork products will go to hungry people across the province. "We are looking forward to another successful year where pork producers will once again show their caring and generosity for the less fortunate in the province," says Paul Mistele, founder and driving force behind the program. "Because of the great response in previous years, the deadline for 2004 donations has been extended until January 14, 2005. We've enclosed the donation form with the Ontario Pork newsletter, to be filled out at the donor's convenience." If anyone has any questions concerning the Donate A Hog Program, they can contact the Ontario Pork Communications Department at 1-877-668-7675.0
