Management
have in southern Ontario, it is usually
recommended that basal area not be
reduced below 20 square metres per
hectare (87 square feet per acre). It is
also recommended that not more than
one third of the basal area be
removed in a harvest or thinning
operation to avoid excessive
disturbance. Of course it is usually
also a goal to concentrate growth on
the best quality stems by removing
poorer stems in thinning and
improvement cutting operations.
There are several options for
measuring basal area. The most
common, easiest and most accurate is
a wedge prism, available from most
forestry supply companies for about
$60. Another simple (and the
cheapest) approach is an angle gauge.
An angle gauge can easily be crafted
from materials commonly at hand.
A more time-consuming option
would be to measure all trees in a
fixed area plot, calculate the basal
area of trees in the plot, then
extrapolate to an acre or hectare.
Regardless of the approach taken
to measure it, basal area is a tool that
should be used to help determine
appropriate management activities in
your woodlot.

measuring basal area with a prism or
constructing and using an angle
gauge, check out the following web
