actually better to burn."
It is also important to know the
construction of the barn. "We need to
know when to stay out and when to
come in."
One type of emergency situation in
rural communities actually provides
too much space for optimal response.
"Remoteness," said Parish. "You
have people out in the back field
doing the corn, or back in the bush,
when injury occurs. By the time we
come along for an off-road rescue
they have probably been there a long
time."
"We talk about the 'Golden Hour'.
the length of time between the
mishap and getting the person to the
hospital. In rural areas that golden
hour is gone so people are often in
extremely critical condition and
survival chances are decreased."
Complicating recovery further
is the fact that these are
usually highly traumatic
injuries, that have to be brought great
distances without too much
movement.
Distance is also a factor in rural
firefighting. "What starts small could
be pretty big by the time we can get
there," said Josling. Distance and
access in winter to fires on farms is
not like it is in town. There are long
drives that create a great challenge
for us."
Getting enough water to the fires
can also be a major challenge,
especially in winter. With the
addition of a new 3,000 -gallon tanker
to accompany the two pumpers to a
fire, Blyth's department will have
5,500 gallons of water on scene.
"However, we've had fires where
we've used 70,000 gallons, though
that's rare. The average for a barn
fire is about 25,000," said Josling."
With the Emergency Service
Training Centre in Blyth, as well as
one being put together in Kingston
for eastern Ontario, firefighters will
receive the education for specific
issues that has until now been
difficult to find, from qualified
instructors with a diverse background
in fire and rescue.
Without question, the training will
be a benefit to rural fire departments.
"It is difficult not to connect farms to
just about every type of training
done. They are mini -factories." said
Parish. °
