period of time. (This is also in part
due to the greater genetic diversity in
trees of a white pine stand.)
Most shade -tolerant species will
also grow in conditions where there
is Tots of Tight, such as when there is
a major disturbance caused by a
major storm, fire or heavy logging;
however, in such conditions they are
often out -competed by species that

are less shade -tolerant. In fact,
species vary considerably in their
light requirements for optimum
growth. Some, such as hemlock,
prefer, and will perform better, in
partial shade.
Often species of varied shade
tolerance grow in close association
with each other. This is especially
true in southern Ontario where our
forests are quite diverse.
