acetylsalicylic acid and the drug was
named aspirin. A number of other
plants, including some poplar species,
also contain salicin and have been
used over the years for pain relief or
other purposes.
Many tree species found in our
local forests are currently utilized in
medicinal, natural health or personal
care products. Throat lozenges often
contain a product from the inner bark
of slippery elm (also known as red
elm). The inner bark contains
mucilage slippery substance) that
helps to soothe a dry or sore throat
and acts as a cough suppressant. The
inner bark of black cherry is also
used in cough drops. The foliage
from white cedar is used to produce
aromatic oils used in therapeutic and
cosmetic products.
Many other forest species besides
trees are also reported to have
therapeutic benefits. Two that are
well known are ginseng and
goldenseal. The roots of these
species are valued as beneficial in
curing a variety of ailments and
providing other assorted health
benefits. Ginseng is in particular
demand in the Orient. Ginseng is
now grown commercially and
researchers are investigating potential
for commercial cultivation of
goldenseal. Unfortunately, in their
natural habitat ginseng is considered
endangered and goldenseal,
threatened. Because the roots of
these species are valuable, the wild
populations have been decimated by
long-term collection.
It seems that most species have
some purported health or cosmetic
benefits. Even the lowly stinging
nettle is used in several products. In
fact, a 1997 USDA publication stated
that Clairol purchases over 50 tons of
stinging nettle a year for use in hair
conditioning products.
There may be income
opportunities in collection of natural
materials for manufacture of these
various plant derived products;
however, a 1999 report Non -Timber

wild plants do not usually share
