Sunday was a time for visiting
relatives or entertaining relatives. We
frequently went to grandma Woods
or Uncle Walter's place which was
Mother's home or the Day's
(Hastings) place for Sunday noon
dinner. After dinner the men usually
went to sleep sitting in the living
room while the women did the dishes
and looked after the children. We
also visited with the Johnstons and
Peacocks, friends who lived near
Bluevale. Ruth Hastings, a relative of
Mother, married Russ Davidge a
fireman from Toronto. They would
come to our place and stay for two or
three days each year.
Sometimes during the year dad
and mother took a longer trip.
About one Sunday a year we
went to the lake, usually Goderich.
Dad belonged to Bluevale Orange
Lodge so the twelfth of July was a
must -celebrate day. The parade was
in a different town each year. We got
to spend most of the day in places
like Bayfield, Lucknow and Brussels.

the Davidges. 1 saw my first dial
phone. In 1945 we attended the
Plowing Match at Port Albert. This

had introduced a radio program
called Farm Radio Forum, for
farmers. At eight o'clock every
Monday evening a topic of interest to
farm families was discussed. During
the winter months the farmers along
the concession were encouraged to
get together to listen to the broadcast
and then discuss the topic for half an
hour. This could be followed by a
social time. The meetings were to be
held at a different home each week.
The farm families along the second
concession met and listened to the
program and then played euchre.
The first winter they listened to
the programme and attempted to have
a discussion but most of the people
felt that the discussions were too
argumentative so they dropped that
