the county's unique communities.
Currently, for instance, Grey
County's black pioneers are featured.
Ontario became a terminus on the
Underground Railway after, at the
end of the 18th century, Lieutenant
Governor John Graves Simcoe
introduced a law to eradicate slavery
in the colony. By the 1820s escaped
slaves fled to Canada through the
secretive network of sympathizers
known as the Underground Railway.
A quilt on display shows the secret
symbols that helped guide the
fugitives safely northward.
Black settlers first took up land
along the Durham Road and
like their white neighbours,
worked to clear the forest and
introduced mixed farming. Later
farms sprung up in Holland,
Artemesia and Sullivan Townships.
To help make ends meet the settles
often worked in forestry and in the
quarries to add a little money.
The first thing you see as you
enter the complex is the "Local
Heroes" display, large panels
highlighting the lives of some of the
heroes of the county. Along with
World War I flying ace Billy Bishop
and hockey goaltender Harry
Lumley, Agnes McPhail shares the
spotlight. Born on a farm near
Hopewell in Proton Township, she
moved, when she was 12, to the farm
west of Ceylon that would be her
home throughout her political career.
After writing a weekly column for
The Owen Sound Sun -Times, she was
elected as the first woman member of
parliament for the Progressive Party,
representing Grey County from 1921
to 1940. She championed the cause
of prison reform, pensions for the
elderly, blind and disabled and better
health services.
Impressive as the new building is,
it's only the beginning of the
complex, says Delton Becker, chair
of Grey County's Heritage
Committee. Within a year some of
the preserved buildings from the
former museum site should be moved
to the new location, he predicts.
When the buildings arrive and are
situated on the north and west portion
of the site, they'll allow additional
educational opportunities for school
programming, says Stephanie
McMullen, Heritage Program Co-
