Personal Answering Machine 6 THE RURAL VOICE Robert Mercer Mark Purdeg, a `rogue' scholar talks on BSE Robert Mercer was editor of the Broadwater Market Letter and commentator for 25 years. 1 went to a meeting at the end of May, where we were told to be prepared to think "outside -the -box" when listening to a presentation by UK researcher and dairy farmer Mark Purdey on the causes of BSE/CJD. Mark Purdey certainly told it as he saw it, and that is not the way the established government and research universities interpret the causal factors to the outbreak of BSE. For one, he does not believe that feed containing meats and bone meal is connected to the outbreak of BSE. There was just too much incriminated feed exported from the UK in the last 40 years to countries that are still BSE -free, he says. Mark Purdey comes from an organic dairy farm background in the U.K. and had the misfortune to bring into his grass-fed organic herd, cattle from elsewhere, four of which developed BSE. Mark Purdey does not think that the BSE group of diseases are of an infectious kind. He believes the degeneration of the brain is caused by a multi -layered toxic soup of environmental factors which includes the presence of low -frequency shock waves. Mark Purdey has concentrated his research efforts on examining the analysis of isolated clusters of the disease breakout for BSE/CWD/CJD and vCJD. He has come up with credible theories. Much of the information given at that meeting appeared to me to be more circumstantial rather than empirical. Mark is saying, in contrast to the current assumed position, that the malformed "prions" in the brain tissue do not serve as a form of infection in the brain of BSE cattle. On the contrary he believes the malformed prions are only a tombstone effect or legacy of the disease process, not the causal agent to initiate the disease. For the science to back up this theory see Mark's website. Because the TSE diseases are found often in clusters around the world, Mark has made it part of his theory that the environmental factors in those areas have a role to play in this brain disease. When visiting these areas he has tested the soils and feed sources for metal values and radioactive/magnetic properties. He says that his work has identified a package of environmental factors that underpins the pathogens of TSE. These include manganese and silver at high levels, and copper deficiency. Where he finds more virulent radioactive metals such as Strontium 90 and Barium in the ecosystem, the disease develops earlier and more aggressively. He also noted that in four cases of vCJD where human patients had died, they were life-long vegetarians. He felt that governments and their staff were so imbedded with the factors and responses to the new infectious diseases such as SARS and Avian Flu, that it was nearly impossible for them to deviate from established protocol for political reasons rather than scientific evidence. His approach to BSE was different. He has doggedly followed his beliefs, he has been nipping at the backsides of established bureaucracy and business interests. He is exposing a painful festering sore of new thought that is difficult to swallow as it may contain more truth than officials are willing to admit. Farmers interested in taking time to look "outside the box" on this issue should look into that gray box on the office desk, and punch in www.markpurdey.com to view a great website for further scientific and practical discussions on BSE/vCJ11.0
