should he mulched.
Herbicides are another option.
Several herbicides are available for
use around tree seedlings. Some can
be sprayed over top of seedlings;
others require that the seedlings be
protected. If needed, a variety of
simple shields can be improvised to
protect seedlings using materials
such as stove pipe or plywood.
It is important that directions on
the manufacturer's label be carefully
followed. The choice of herbicide
will also depend on the species of
competing vegetation. Timing is
also critical to ensure the application
is made when vegetation is most
susceptible and reapplication may be
necessary in the first or subsequent
years.
A combination of some of the
above approaches may be the best
option, or other approaches such as
tree shelters may be considered.
Several Extension Notes are
available that can help you decide on
the best approach. They can be
viewed at the following web site
http://wwwirconline.com/Extension
_Notes_English/index.html .
Whatever approach you decide
on, protecting your trees from
competing vegetation will also
protect the time and money you have
invested in planting them.
