Management
moisture and nutrients, as it keeps
competing vegetation growing
actively throughout the growing
season. Also, there is a danger of
damage by equipment. Mowing is a
good choice if vegetation is
controlled adjacent to the seedlings
by another method such as mulch or
herbicides. String trimmers should
not be used around young trees, as
the bark is often injured and trees can
be killed if damage totally encircles
the stem.
Cultivation is another option,
particularly if the site is already
cultivated when the trees are planted.
Optimum growth and survival is
likely to be attained if the site can be
maintained in a cultivated state.
However, suitable equipment must be
available and surface erosion may be
a concern if the site is not level.
Also, if cultivation is not maintained,
the site tends to seed in with a variety
of weed species. As with mowing.
cultivation should not be carried out
too close to the seedlings due to the
risk of damage to the stem or roots.
Mulch is often utilized to control
vegetation around seedlings,
particularly for smaller planting
projects. The mulch material is
placed around the base of the
seedling and restricts the germination
and growth of competing plants and
helps to hold soil moisture adjacent to
the tree seedling. A variety of
materials can be used for mulch. A
few commercial products are
available, composed of plastic or
fibre materials. Other materials can
be used, including straw, newspaper
and wood chips. Weeds are more
likely to grow through some
materials than others, depending on
the depth of material applied. Some,
such as newspaper, may need to be
reapplied annually. Others, like
straw, can provide habitat for rodents.
To be most effective, mulches
need to be applied early in the
growing season. Later application
may require that vegetation be
mowed before the mulch is applied.
