The Rural Voice, 2004-06, Page 51Advice Advance payments available on soybeans The Ontario Soybean Growers (OSG) and AGRICORP have announced they'll work together to ensure efficient delivery of the Advanced Payments Program for soybeans. Beginning May 1, 2004, AGRICORP began administering the program under contract with the OSG. The Advanced Payments Program is a federal risk management program that allows producers access to capital up to $250,000, with the first $50,000 being interest free. The program was previously delivered by Ontario Soybean Growers with AGRICORP providing audit services. Ontario Soybean Growers is the provincial voice of soybean growers. Representing over 25,000 Ontario producers, the OSG's mission is to develop and promote a sound industry business environment that will allow Ontario soybean producers the opportunity for viable and profitable ongoing returns. Sow body condition is also a key factor. Thin sows have less thermal insulation and are less able to adjust to lower environmental temperatures, and thin sows also require a larger increase in feed at a lower temperature. Temperature is an important variable to consider in a sow -feeding strategy. All animals have a thermoneutral zone, the range of temperatures at which they are most comfortable and _ their body temperature remains constant. In sows, an environment where the temperature is I degree C below their thermoneutral temperature (20 degres C) increases their requirement by 3 - 4 per cent more feed. Lactating Sows: It is essential that sows start eating after farrowing and continue to eat well throughout lactation. This is vital since the nutrient requirements of the lactating sow are three times higher than dur- ing gestation and, considering current average weaning ages, there is no time to waste. Ultimately the goal is to minimize weight loss (less than 10 kg in 21 days), increase piglet growth rate, decrease piglet mortality, and ensure re -breeding and subsequent reproductive performance. Low feed intake during lactation translates into reduced nutrient intake for the sow, higher body weight loss (body fat and protein), reduced piglet growth rate and weaning weight, reduced estrus activity, longer weaning to estrus interval. reduced water flow rates are at (east 2 subsequent litter size and lifetime litres/minute. performance. and a higher culling An integrated feeding strategy that rate.
