section of people from the
agricultural community were invited
to the test -user session. A lot of
positive comments were received
about the database and several good
suggestions on possible
improvements were incorporated into
the database.
The AMMTO site also includes a
list, of 380 companies worldwide that
sell manure technologies including
contact information to help farmers
and regulators obtain information
from a wide of technology
suppliers.
There's also an evaluation
process to allow individuals to
come up with a numerical
ranking of technical capabilities of
different technologies to help in the
process of deciding what manure
management technology is most
appropriate for their particular
operation.
Several presentations prepared for
the Centralia Swine Research Update
conference but never delivered
because of the January blizzard that
cancelled the event, also dealt with
various aspects of nutrient
management.
Ron Fleming of Ridgetown
College had been studying
mechanical liquid/solid manure
separators. His researchers ran six
separators through a test procedure
using three different liquid manures
with varying dry -matter content.
Capacity of the units ranged from
a commercial version of a membrane
filter system rated at 150 litres per
minute to the Maximizer units that
ranged from 300 to 600 litres per
minute. The capacity varied
according to the dry -matter content in
the manure.
Because mechanical separators
rely on energy inputs, Fleming
warned that farmers should be aware
of the amount of energy required to
carry out the separation operation.
One of the systems separated over
120,000 litres for one kWh of
electricity while one system used a
diesel engine and handled 1200 litres
of manure per litre of fuel — though
he notes there was a difference in the
effluent quality.
Most separators have an easy time
of removing large particles like those
trapped on a 50 mesh screen,
Fleming noted. but swine manure

doesn't contain many Targe particles.
It's important to know how small a
manure particle can be removed by a
system.
Most of the systems are designed
to operate with little or no
supervision, he observed. The price
range is generally from $20,000 to
$100,000 but it's possible to get
systems as high as $400,000. On top
of that there are setup costs for
wiring, plumbing and shelter if
needed.
Fleming, along with Jim Morris
and Malcolm MacAlpine of
Ridgetown College also
experimented with feeding water
from a VSEP system fitted with a
reverse -osmosis filter pack. A total of
54 pigs were divided into three
watering regimes: one group getting
ordinary barn water, one getting
water separated from liquid manure
using the VSEP system and one
group getting half barn water and
half permeate from the separation
system.
The result shows that the VSEP
unit produced separated water from
liquid manure at a quality level
acceptable to pigs. The data revealed
that no performance or health effects
resulted from providing the
recovered water from liquid manure
to young weaner pigs from 12-26 kg
live -weight.
Researchers at the University of
Saskatchewan and Institut de
Recherche et de D6veloppement en
Agroenvironnement at Descham-
bault, QC carried out two
experiments into the value of low
protein diets and oil sprinkling to
reduce ammonia emissions and odour
and dust emissions in pig barns.
Feeding a low protein diet with
fermentable carbohydrates was found
to reduce ammonia levels during
three cycles in grower -finisher rooms
without loss of performance.
However, applying a sprinkling of
raw canola oil did not have an impact
on ammonia emissions.
When it came to controlling dust,
however, the results were just the
opposite. Sprinkling raw canola oil
reduced the total dust emissions from
the pens by 76 per cent but the low
protein diet had no effect. Attempts
to measure the odour levels between
the two methods were inconclusive.0
