Management
each tree. Use of the winch as much
as possible reduces both compaction
and damage to residual trees. Trails
can also be laid out to avoid sharp
turns and utilize trees that are to be
harvested as bumper and pivot trees.
Injury to these trees is not a concern
since they will be removed anyway.
Often trail layout can be carried out
in advance, when conditions are wet
or equipment is being repaired.
Participants had ample
opportunity to discuss these and
other topics with each other during
the workshop. Those loggers who
took time from their busy schedules
to attend the workshop should be
congratulated. They obviously
recognize how important doing their
jobs well is to the sustainability of
our forest resource.
