1 was recently fortunate enough to
participate on a committee planning a
workshop for logging contractors this
spring in the Waterloo area.
Participants heard a number of very
interesting presentations.
One was one delivered by Dave
Deugo, a long-time forester with the
Ministry of Natural Resources in
Bracebridge, discussing the potential
impacts of harvesting operations on
future tree growth, health and quality.
Deugo mentioned that when
logging is planned there is often
considerable (and well justified)
focus on selecting the right trees for
harvest in order to maintain or
improve the productivity of the
forest. As well, there are good
guidelines available on tree selection
and marking.
However, the key point Deugo
made was that the best marking job
possible would be of little benefit if
the harvesting operation is carried out
in a way that causes unacceptable
damage to the woodiot. Such
damage can result in reduced growth
rates as well as a reduction in
merchantable volume and tree quality
in future harvests.
Compaction and rutting are the
primary site damage issues.
Compaction can be as much, or more,
of a problem for forest sites as it is
