Infected trees should also be
carefully assessed before removing
them from the stand. The USDA
Forest Service recommends retaining
trees that have 70 per cent live
crown and less than 20 per cent of
the trunk and root flares affected by
cankers. Also trees with no canker
and 50 per cent or more live crown

should be retained. Trees not
meeting these criteria or dead trees
can be removed.
The Forest Gene Conservation
Association (FGCA) is working on a
butternut conservation program that
includes identification and grafting
of potentially resistant trees as well
as developing a conservation
