28 THE RURAL VOICE
John Rheaume of Great Lakes
Nutrition agreed with Saxena on the
variability of nutritional value in
whey but said there are huge benefits.
The power of milk as a feed can be
seen by the fact piglets quadruple
their weight in just three weeks on
their mother's milk, he pointed out.
The protein whey is also better
quality and better balanced than
soybean meal, Rheaume pointed out.
The protein provided by whole
whey with six per cent dry matter and
13 per cent protein can save $20 a
tonne on rations, depending on the
price of soybean meal or other
protein sources. Using whey at 20 per
cent can reduce the amount of
soybean meal in a ration from 200
kilos to 160. The minerals in the
whey can also reduce the amount of
premix required.
However the savings using
whey vary greatly according
to what's left in it after the
plant has drawn off as many valuable
elements, particularly protein. A
producer who buys whey permeate is
saving only $5 a tonne, Rheaume
said. There are still minerals
available in this whey so the premix
ratio could be lowered but the useful
protein level is so low, soybean meal
should actually be increased.
All this assumes the producer has
had a nutritionist balance the
different rations, Rheaume said. The
worst case scenario is that a producer
feeds a permeate product as if it was
whole whey in which case the pigs
are getting lycine levels probably 15
per cent lower than expected.
The difficulty with whey products
that have had protein removed is that
not only is the ratio of protein lower,
but the proteins most necessary for
pig growth are also the ones that are
most valuable for fractioning off,
Rheaume said. The proteins that are
being pulled out also contain the
most lycine, he said. Too often there
isn't enough information coming
with the fractionated whey and
producers aren't getting the
information they need to formulate
diets for their pigs.
The amount of whey being treated
to recover valuable ingredients seems
to be increasing, Too often there
isn't enough information said.
The savings using whole whey are
even greater in a nursery diet, he said
