The sorter only operates two days
a week. "We find there's no need to
run it any more often than that," Pat
says. "We ship on Sunday and we
have to have our numbers in by
Thursday ands the way our work
schedule works out we try to finish
our sorting by Tuesday or
Wednesday."
The loading room has two
different pens in it. "It helps us speed
up the loading," Kim explains. While
Pat is loading pigs from the one pen,
Kim or their boys can be filling the
other loading room. "We can usually
load a whole pot -load of pigs in a
half hour or less."
The barn also includes a smaller
"slush pen" in another room
for pigs that haven't reached
market size when the rest of the pen
has gone to market. When about 50
pigs are left in the main room they'll
be moved to this smaller area so the
room can be pressure -cleaned and
refilled.
"Overall I'm very happy with the
system," Pat says. "It's been working
for us."
Still they do have some bugs
they're working to eliminate. Pigs in
