Time for cattlemen to unite and take control
Having been Neaten, robbed, and left
for dead on the roads to Guelph,
Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal,
cattlemen are in dire need of a Good
Samaritan. Recent initiatives by West
Grey Premium Beef and Gencor Foods.
while highly commendable. are only a
start to resolving the challenge in the
livestock industry.
It is time for the entire farm
community to get really serious about
taking back control. To avoid or delay
plant constructions is to concede defeat
and exit the industry.
Forty-six years ago dairy men in our
area initiated an industry co-operative —
now known as Gay Lea Foods. Back
then, the farmgate price for milk was
5.7 cents per litre. However, since
delivering raw product to the co-
operative, farmer -investors have never
failed to receive a worthwhile return on
our investment — plus the knowledge
that we have a measure of control on
the retail side of the table as well.
Since pioneer times, churches.

centres have been built by folks with
courage, vision, and determination to
succeed for the betterment of their
community. I believe consumers and
agribusiness would widely support
carefully planned initiatives to process
beef. While I have no illusions that this
road would be at all easy, with top
management and producer financial
support, together with some loan
guarantees from governments, this
could be to cattlemen all that Gay Lea
Foods is to dairymen.
Only when cattlemen unite in the
cause can they take control of their
industry and move forward.0
