Harvey Smith took over the day-to-
day chores, which he still does to this

Betty and Ken have stayed
active around the farm and in
the community since that
time. They both served as trustees for
the Duncan Community Centre,
where they continue to volunteer.
They played a role in heritage
celebrations promoting the
community in 1967, and volunteered
their time for the 1993/94 Rocklyn
Parade and School Reunion. A
member of the Royal Canadian
Legion, Ken also served as a trustee
for the local school board and
canvassed for the Canadian Cancer
Society and the Heart and Stroke
Foundation for many years. In 1988,
the Welters were honoured with the
National Heritage Stewardship
Award for their role in protecting
Ontario's natural resources. During
this past year, Ken received the
Queen's Jubilee Award, a mark of
distinction which he proudly wears

Today, Betty and Ken are still
active on their farm and in their
community.
When they're not volunteering at
the Beaver Valley Community
Centre in Thornbury, they enjoy the
occasional dances and pot lucks at
the old Duncan schoolhouse. Betty
walks, skis or snowshoes every day
though the fields into the bush,
keeping Ken up to date on the crops,
the animal tracks and the depth of the
snow. Meanwhile, Ken keeps busy
tapping his maple trees and indulging
in his self-taught hobby — turning
wood from the forest into clocks,
bowls, candle holders and furniture.
As she savours her dessert at
the Rocklyn Community
Centre. Betty Weller looks
back fondly on a fulfilling life in
Euphrasia. Someone asks her if she's
"a, local". Good naturedly, Betty
replies, "Oh no, 1 only moved here
57 years ago!" 0
