"Haven't they heard there's a crisis out here on the farm?" growled George McKenzie after Dave Winston mentioned reading an article in the paper that the local council was expecting a big tax increase this year. "They say they've got behind because they were trying to hold the line for years and now they've got to catch up," said Dave. "Wouldn't it be terrible if government employees didn't get their cost -of -living -plus" said George. "Wouldn't it be nice if we could say 'we've been falling behind for years and now we need $25 a bushel for corn'." said Cliff Murray. "I'd take just getting what 1 did last year for my beef," said George. "What I'd like to know is where they think we're supposed to find the money to pay for a tax increase, not to mention nutrient management plans and all the other stuff they think we should be spending money on so we can have the privilege of farming and losing money." "And of course some genius at the assessment office decides your farm is worth more just because other idiois have been spending too much on farmland so you're supposed to be rich enough to be able to pay even higher taxes," said Dave. "I never thought I'd say it but the GST looks good that way," said Cliff. "At least with GST if you can't afford to spend money you don't have to pay more taxes." "Yeh but think of how much GST we've paid to the Liberals for this sponsorship boondoggle," said George. "I don't know, I was wishing they'd kept that sponsorship program in place and they could give farmers a hundred million for painting Canadian flags on the sides of their cattle." said Cliff. "At least we could make some money then." "Might make up for some of the money we're not getting from the Americans," said George. "Poor Americans, seems like we're the source of all their problems," said Dave. "I mean they blame us for BSE, their pork producers are upset because there are too many pigs going south and the wheat guys think the Wheat Board is cheating." "Not to mention they say we're a haven for terrorists," said Cliff. "Which we probably are," said George. "I'm surprised they haven't decided to invade us to clean up the mess we're in," said Cliff. "Well they wouldn't need to tie up many troops the way they have in Iraq," said George, "not with the state of our army." "You know when you look at how much money the Americans have been shoveling into Iraq, maybe we'd be better off if they did invade," said Dave. "There was a funny book like that once." said Cliff. "This tiny country was going broke back in the 1950s and they saw how much the Americans paid to the Germans and the Japanese after they lost the Second World War and thought they'd be better off if they lost a war with the U.S. so they could get compensation." "You've gotta admit the Americans are the most generous victors in history when they win a war," said George. "Yeh, have you seen how much money George Bush has generously given to his friends to rebuilding Iraq?" said Cliff. "So did this little country get its money?" wondered Dave. "Well the problem is they invaded New York during one of the big nuclear alerts they had back then and everybody was in fallout shelters and the Americans didn't even realized had been attacked so all the effort was for nothing," said Cliff. "Huh, if they wanted to get the Americans attention they should be have brought along one cow with BSE," said George.0
