Forage insurance will now be
based solely on rainfall.
Improvements
announced for
forage insurance
Ontario's Forage Insurance
Program has moved beyond the
pilot project stage with new
improvements to offer better
service, Agricorp's Jason Emke
told farmers attending Crops Day
at Grey -Bruce Farmers' Week in
Elmwood, January 12.
"This has never been done
anywhere else in the world," said
Emke of the program which was
established in 2000. Because of
discontent among farmers with
the program for simulating what
forage yields should be, this
year's revised program will be
based entirely on the amount of
rainfall, Emke said.
Last year, still under the pilot
project, there were 730 customers
in seven areas of the province,
Emke said. The expansion
strategy is to make the insurance
program available to all forage
growers in the province by 2006.
Because the program will now
be based on rainfall, rain monitors
will be set up at 15 km intervals
to record precipitation. A further
350 gauges will be required to
make the program work. In 2004
there will be 250 sites measuring
rainfall. University of Guelph will
collect and record the rainfall
