"Btnniitint! It's cold " George grumbled as he wandered into Mabels one blustery day for the morning conference on how to run the world, otherwise known as coffee break. "Oh come off it," said Molly Whiteside as she delivered the coffee. "This isn't anywhere near as cold as it is in Alberta and they had nearly 60,000 people sitting outside in the cold watching a hockey game the other night." "Yeh and they were the guys talking about easterners freezing in the dark," said Dave Winston. "You'd think if anybody could afford to play in a heated building it would be Albertans, wouldn't you?" said Wayne Bruce. "Talk about a good marketing job," said George. "You're sitting out there freezing your buns off, sitting so far away from the rink that you've got to imagine where the puck is and watching players that could be the local midgets for all you know because you can't see their faces and they've convinced you this is a good thing that you'll never forget. Boy we should get these guys to market our cull cows!" "It's supposed to be taking you back to your roots," said Cliff Murray, "back to the time when you played hockey on the pond." "Yeh well I remember those days and I'm not sure I want to go back. I think I lost a few fingers and toes on that pond." "Oh I took mine home alright," said Cliff. "I can vividly remember how much they hurt as they thawed out." "You guys are just getting too old to remember the fun of it all," said Molly. "I kind of hope this catches on and people get back outside in the fresh air for skating and playing hockey." "Seems to me this is why we're spending a fortune on arenas, said George. "Yeh some of these new arenas even have heated floors in the dressing rooms," said Wayne. "Not like the arenas when 1 was a kid," said George, "when your backside froze while the side next to the stove in the middle of the room baked." "I'd like to have a picture of that one," said Molly. "No you don't, even if he was only 12 back then," said Dave. "I guess they're actually worrying about that kind of thing with these new camera phones," said Wayne. "Places with dressing rooms are worrying that people will take photos of naked people and send emails of them all over the place." "Phones that take pictures? I mean who would even have had such a bizarre idea," wondered George. "Hey, I hear they're a big item for Christmas this year." said Cliff. "I heard an estimate they're going to sell 63 million of them this year." "Remember when you used to actually get something you needed for Christmas?" said George. "Yeh but in those days there were lots of things you needed that you couldn't afford to buy for yourself," said Cliff. "Nowadays people have enough money that if they need it, they go out and buy it." "And then they expect something they really want when they open their presents," said Wayne, "especially the kids." "I think this drives the economy," said Dave. "As soon as this Christmas is over there are all these companies out there that are trying to create absolutely needless things that people can give for Christmas next year." "And every year the TV stations go out and create this buzz about things people just must have. Remember the fights over Tickle -Me Elmo?" "Yeh, well the way things have been this year I won't be watching for that kind of gift," said George. "I'm thinking of giving hamburger."0
