run, she said.
Mitchell said the deadstock issue is
a symptom of the general breakdown
of the system. "It's an issue that has
to be dealt with," she said.
Johns said her government has
been assisting deadstock companies
in the short run through the Healthy
Futures program. In the long term
she said she'd like to look at
incineration on a close -to -the -farm
basis and at the effects of composting
on a large scale. But her preferred
option, she said, would be rendering
for biodiesel production. "That
would allow the farmer to receive
value for the product."
A question about strengthening
meat inspection, came closest to
touching off fireworks at the
meeting.
Johns defended her government on
the issue saying the provincial
government was moving toward
federal standards for all plants. She
said the government has doubled the
dollars spent on meat inspection
since it came to office and increased
the hours from 177,000 a year to
195,000 hours. Despite these
improvements, "we cannot stop
something people are doing in the
middle of the night," she said,
referring to the Aylmer Meats
controversy.
Joslin supported her on that. "The
problem is that you can't have
inspectors there 24 hours a day,
seven days a week," he said. "If you
don't have a conscience you're going
to try to get by and no amount of
regulation will stop you."
