"When the wind is blowing in the
North, No fisherman should set forth,
When the wind is blowing in the
East, 'Tis not fit for man or beast,
When the wind is blowing in the
South, /t brings the food over the
fish's mouth,
When the wind is blowing in the
West, that is when fishing's best. "
"When the wind shifts against the
sun, trust it not, for back it will run."
"The sharper the blast, the sooner
it's past."
As the saying goes, "To read the
wind is to read the weather." I
suspect that weather vanes were
probably placed on top of barns not
just for telling wind direction, but
rather to highlight changes in wind
direction throughout the day.
Whether the wind is backing or
veering gives weather watchers an
indication of advancing weather
fronts. In the northern hemisphere,
the wind near ground shifts
clockwise as the front passes.

Cold fronts push their way under
lighter warm air, which rises steeply
and often brings brief strong
showers. As the front approaches the
weather vane would indicate a
sharpening of winds from the
south/southwest. With the passage of
the front, the wind gusts and rapidly
shifts to the west or north. Our cold
fronts are usually oriented northeast
to southeast and move (usually with
winds of 20+ miles per hour) in an
easterly/southeasterly direction.
Warm fronts on the other hand
usually advance with about half the
wind speeds and create a gradual rise
in warm air over a wedge of cold air
that may result in steady lingering
rains. The cloud sequence of a warm
front begins with the lowering and
thickening of cirrus cloud cover
previously described and gives us up
