have ever watched a thunderstorm
develop on a summer afternoon.
Often cumulus clouds simply dot the
summer sky and fair weather
remains. However, if cumulus clouds
begin to grow vertically it may be a
sign of rain. But why not practice
watching how quickly these cumulus
clouds build and climb — the faster
they grow, the more likely it is to
rain. If the clouds develop a dark
bottom and anvil shaped top
(cumulonimbus) then look out for
heavy rains.

a hen, get ready to reef your topsails
then."
"A ring around the moon, means
rain or snow coating soon."
"Mare's tails; storms and gales.
Mackerel sky; not 24 hours dry."
One can also watch for changes in
thickness and growth of cirrus clouds

and see for oneself if there is often a
pattern to what follows in the next 48
hours. If cirrus clouds stay thin the
weather is likely to be fair, but if they
get thicker and spread it is more
likely to rain or snow in the next day
or two. Likewise, deteriorating
weather may be ahead if there are
mackerel skies forming
(cirrocumulus or altocumulus
clouds), and snow or rain is possible
if there is a halo or ring around the
