Mark of
Excellence
Hereford Show
will use
ultrasound in
judging
A new twist to the regular parade
of livestock before a judge for
appraisal, is being added at this
year's Mark of Excellence Hereford
Show to be held on October 4 at the
Walkerton Agricultural Fair
Grounds.
At most livestock shows in
Ontario, a visual appraisal of the
judge determines how well cattle
place in competition towards that
coveted prize. But with today's
technology, it's possible to see under
the hide through ultra sound to
determine how marbled a steak will
be, and take the related measurement
according to age of the animal and
size of the ribeye.
The show will be implementing
some of this technology into the
judging,when Judge Kenneth Geuns
from Michigan State University,
Extension Beef Specialist, supports
his placement with more than just
guess work.
There will also be a new class
introduced for Fls, having a
Hereford sire or Hereford dam, and
will consist of the current year's
heifer calves, to indicate the
excellence in building a strong
genetic cow base for the production
of superior beef.
Youth have a Targe participation
in the Walkerton Mark of Excellence
Show, with a strong showmanship
class that gives opportunity for
learning, and exercising many skills
including co-operation, and
presentation. The prize money is
also a little out of the ordinary, as
class winnings and class placement
to 10th place are well worth taking
part in, starting at $100 for placing
first in each class, along with special
presentations to grand and divisional
champions.0
