system, the horse generally moved
about twice as fast as the load was
raised. Once raised, the Toad could be
slid along the central beam inside the
barn to position the hay for dropping
(by tripping the spurs or spikes)
anywhere along the entire length of
the barn. Once in place and packed,
a hay -knife (our example still hangs
in the barn) was used to cut a `chunk'
out of the un -baled hay for throwing
down to the cattle.
While still without the "luxury" of
baling systems, the mechanical
genius of these early farmers is
nothing less than remarkable. The
riggings for filling larger and larger
mows, or building larger and larger
haystacks (if today's large round
bales resemble wheaties in the field,
then some of these old haystacks
would have resembled "loaves of
