In addition, there will be an
ongoing demo of recently developed
computer -electronics equipment
designed to provide a continuous
record of each pig's body
temperature. "This monitoring
technology enables a producer to
immediately pinpoint any sick
animals in the herd," Underhill says.
Heat cycles in the breeding sows and
gilts can also be easily detected. In
addition, ultrasound equipment will
be included in the demonstrations.
To promote biosecurity, the Swine
Demo will be housed in a portable,
fabric building, separate from the
main Swine Pavilion. Producers will,
at their own option, choose to view
all or part of the Swine Expo
exhibits. Hand -wash stations will be
conveniently located at the site.
All pigs in the Swine Demo will
be from high health herds and all
animals will be blood -tested before
arrival at the show to ensure they
provide minimum disease risk. All
hogs will be at market weight and
will be sent direct to slaughter at the
completion of the show.
The popular Swine Pavilion will
again showcase the latest in
herd health, swine genetics,
nutrition programs and handling
equipment. The many manufacturers
and suppliers that service the multi-
million dollar pork industry will set
up shop for three days to network
with producers and other industry
representatives.
A new, larger Trillium farm
building structure will house the
Sheep and Goat Expo.
"This section of Livestock Central
keeps growing every year," says
Underhill.
The larger facility will
accommodate the demand for more
space from suppliers of equipment
and services to this growth segment
of the livestock industry. "Our
surveys point to more herd and flock
owners with larger investments and
these producers are always looking
for new ideas that will make their
operations more efficient," says
Underhill.
New this year — a live A.I.
demonstration with goats will also
take place daily at the Show.
